Pet CBD in Idaho: What's Legal?

The Short Answer

Pet CBD products are legal in Idaho if they are THC-Free.

However, many products marketed online and in other states would not meet Idaho's standards. This creates a unique challenge for Idaho pet owners who are trying to shop responsibly.

Idaho's THC-Free Standard

Unlike many states that permit small amounts of THC in hemp products, Idaho has taken a much stricter approach. For Idaho consumers, the practical takeaway is simple: If a product contains detectable levels of THC, it is illegal in Idaho. This applies to pet products just as much as products intended for people.

Why Dispensaries Are Not the Answer

Many pet owners assume dispensaries are the best place to shop for pet CBD products. In reality, dispensary products are generally designed for people, not animals.

In Oregon, for example, state regulations prohibit dispensaries from carrying products specifically intended for pets. As a result, virtually everything on the shelf is formulated for human use.

This creates two potential problems. First, many dispensary products contain THC, which we do not recommend for pets. Second, products intended for people may contain flavorings, sweeteners, essential oils, supplemental ingredients, or other additives that are perfectly acceptable for humans but inappropriate for animals.

For these reasons, we recommend choosing products specifically formulated for pets rather than repurposing products intended for people.

Why Idaho Pet Owners Need to Be Careful

In our view, Idaho's THC-Free standard aligns surprisingly well with pet safety. Dogs appear to be significantly more sensitive to THC than people, and evidence supporting THC use in pets remains limited. That means many products marketed as "full-spectrum" in other states may create both legal concerns and unnecessary risks for pets.

Unfortunately, many online CBD retailers are not built for Idaho. Products may contain THC, rely on incomplete or outdated laboratory testing, or make claims that are difficult for consumers to verify. In many cases, retailers simply repeat information provided by the manufacturer without independently confirming it.

Amazon presents a different problem. Amazon does not officially allow CBD products, so many sellers attempt to work around marketplace rules by using vague labeling, inconsistent descriptions, or products that may not contain the advertised ingredients at all. This makes it especially difficult for consumers to verify what they are actually purchasing.

For these reasons, we encourage Idaho pet owners to review laboratory reports, verify THC status, and learn how to evaluate products for themselves. And never buy hemp products from Amazon.

How Herbal Edge Evaluates Pet Products

At Herbal Edge, pet products go through the same Independent Verification Process as our human products, with one important addition: a pet-specific formulation review.

In addition to reviewing laboratory reports and manufacturer claims, we evaluate product formulations for ingredients we believe may be inappropriate for animals. Pets are sensitive to many ingredients that are perfectly safe for people, including certain sweeteners, flavoring agents, essential oils, and supplemental ingredients.

Our goal is not simply to find products that contain CBD. Our goal is to identify products that are appropriately formulated for pets, supported by testing, and aligned with our THC-Free standards.

Bottom Line

Pet CBD is legal in Idaho when it meets Idaho's THC-Free standard. The challenge for most pet owners is not finding a CBD product. It is finding products that are both legal and appropriate for animals.

That is why we encourage Idaho consumers to verify THC status, review laboratory reports, and choose products specifically formulated for pets.
