How to Choose a Pet CBD Product

Shopping for pet CBD can feel overwhelming. There are thousands of products available, companies make wildly different claims, and prices vary from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars per bottle.

In this guide, we're going to walk through the process we use to evaluate products for our own store. While no system is perfect, these are the standards we believe give pet owners the best chance of finding safe, effective, and reasonably priced CBD products.

Shopping with Herbal Edge can save you time, research, and buyer's remorse, but you don't need us to follow this process. These same principles can help you evaluate pet CBD products no matter where you shop.

Step 1: Decide What You're Trying to Accomplish

Before worrying about brands, ingredients, or cannabinoid ratios, decide what you're trying to accomplish.

Common goals include:

  • Mobility support
  • General comfort
  • Situational stress
  • Travel Stress
  • Fireworks
  • Restlessness
  • General wellness

Your goal helps determine the dose you may ultimately need and whether consistent daily use makes sense.

CBD or CBD + CBG?

If given the choice, we generally recommend CBD + CBG products over CBD alone. Both cannabinoids are non-intoxicating and appear to work well together. While research is still developing, many pet owners report that CBD + CBG products provide better results than CBD alone, particularly for mobility, comfort, and overall wellness.

For most pets, CBD remains the foundation, but we view CBG as one of the most promising companion cannabinoids currently available.

Step 2: Choose a Delivery Method

Most pet CBD products fall into one of two categories:

Treats

Treats are convenient and easy to administer. Many pets happily take them and owners appreciate the simplicity.

Tinctures

Tinctures offer more precise dosing and are usually more economical. They can be administered directly or mixed with food.

Many people spend a lot of time debating absorption rates and bioavailability. In practice, product quality and appropriate dosing matter far more than whether you choose a treat or a tincture.

Step 3: Determine an Appropriate Dose

This is where many pet owners run into problems.

A surprising number of pet products contain only a few milligrams of CBD per serving. While that may sound impressive on the label, it may be insufficient for anything but very small animals.

The goal is not to buy the strongest product available. The goal is to find a product that allows you to administer an effective dose consistently and affordably.

Step 4: Evaluate the Company

At this point, you know what you want, now you have to decide who to buy it from. Use these questions to find a reliable company:

  • Do they provide laboratory reports?
  • Are the reports recent?
  • Do they explain where their products are made?
  • Do they disclose who manufactures them?
  • Do they discuss THC content openly?
  • Do they appear to understand pet safety?

Many CBD retailers know surprisingly little about the products they sell. In some cases, they simply purchase generic products from a wholesaler and apply their own label.
That doesn't automatically make the product bad, but it does make accountability more difficult.

Companies that understand their products, explain their standards, and openly discuss testing are usually a safer bet than companies relying entirely on marketing.

Step 4.5: Verify THC Status

This step is especially important for pet owners.

Dogs appear to be significantly more sensitive to THC than people, and evidence supporting THC use in pets remains limited. We recommend choosing THC-Free products specifically formulated for animals.

If a company cannot clearly explain whether a product contains THC, consider that a warning sign.

Step 5: Evaluate the Price

The cheapest product is not always the best value. The most expensive product is not always the best product.

Instead of comparing bottle prices, compare the total amount of CBD in the package and calculate the cost per 100 milligrams.

Many products marketed as premium are simply underdosed products sold at luxury prices. A quality product should provide enough CBD to administer an effective dose without becoming prohibitively expensive.

Idaho Considerations

If you live in Idaho, pay particular attention to THC content. Many products sold online are formulated for states with different hemp laws and may not meet Idaho's standards.

Pet owners should also be cautious about using dispensary products intended for people, as they may contain THC or ingredients that are inappropriate for animals.

Bottom Line

Most pet owners spend too much time worrying about treats versus tinctures and not enough time evaluating the company behind the product.

Start with your goal. Choose a delivery method. Determine an appropriate dose. Then focus on transparency, testing, THC status, and overall value.
