How much CBD should my pet take?
The Short Answer
Most pets respond well somewhere between 0.5 and 2mg of CBD per pound of body weight per day. Some pets do well with less. Some require more. The right dose depends on the animal, the product, and the goal.
Rather than focusing on finding the perfect dose immediately, we recommend using a simple process to identify the lowest effective dose for your pet.

The 1-2-3 Method
Step 1: Pick a Starting Dose
For most pets, we recommend starting with approximately 0.5mg of CBD per pound of body weight per day. Don't worry too much about getting the starting dose exactly right. The purpose of this method is to help you quickly identify an effective range and then fine tune from there.
Step 2: Increase Every 3 Days
Administer the starting dose consistently for three days. On day four, double the dose and continue for another three days. On day seven, triple the original starting dose and continue for the final three days.
For example, a 20-pound dog might look like this:
Days 1-3: 10mg per day
Days 4-6: 20mg per day
Days 7-9: 30mg per day
Pay attention to your pet's behavior, comfort, activity level, and overall wellbeing at each dose. If you are satisfied with the results at any point during the process, there is no need to continue increasing the dose. Simply use that amount as your standard dose.
Step 3: Choose the Lowest Effective Dose
At the end of the experiment, review the results. If one of the doses delivered the effect you were looking for, use that as your standard dose going forward. The goal is to find the minimum effective dose, not the highest dose your pet can tolerate.
If you have not found a dose that produces the results you are looking for, continue the process for one additional phase.
For days 10-12, administer four times your original starting dose and continue observing your pet's response.
If you still notice no effect at all, we encourage you to contact us directly. Most pet owners will notice some change during this process, even if it is not the specific result they were hoping for. Complete lack of any observable effect is uncommon and is something we would like to discuss further.
One interesting observation from working with pet owners is that dosing variation appears to be much greater in pets than in people. While body weight certainly matters, it often matters less than owners expect. Age, activity level, metabolism, individual sensitivity, and even breed differences may influence how an animal responds to CBD.
For that reason, we generally recommend using body weight based dosing only as a conservative starting point and allowing your pet's response to guide future adjustments.
How Often Should CBD Be Given?
For most pets, once or twice daily works well.
We generally recommend:
- Administering with food
- Using the same schedule each day
- Do not administration through drinking water
CBD oils do not mix well with water, making dosing inconsistent and difficult to track.
Older pets and pets with chronic discomfort often do well with split dosing, where half the daily amount is given in the morning and half in the evening.
CBD or CBG?
While CBD alone can be effective, we generally prefer CBD + CBG formulas for most pets.
CBD provides the foundation, while CBG may provide additional support for calm behavior, mobility, recovery, and overall wellness. For many animals, the combination simply appears to work better than CBD alone.

THC and Pets
Unlike people, pets are often much more sensitive to THC. Even relatively small amounts can cause intoxication and unwanted side effects.

Why Product Quality Matters More For Pets
Not all pet CBD products are created equal. Pets are often more sensitive to THC, contaminants, and inappropriate ingredients than people. Unfortunately, product quality varies dramatically across the CBD industry.
Many food and supplements ingredients that are perfectly safe for people are NOT safe for your pets, yet some manufacturers use them in products marketed for pets anyway.

Treats vs Tinctures

The best option is the one you will remember to administer consistently.
Dogs vs Cats
Dogs are generally straightforward. Most will happily take CBD in food, treats, or directly from a dropper.
Cats can be more challenging. Many owners have success mixing CBD into wet food, while others find direct oral administration works best.
For picky cats, concentrated tinctures are often helpful because they allow the same dose to be administered with less oil and less food volume.
Senior Pets
Senior pets are among the most common CBD users.
Many owners report improvements in comfort, mobility, activity levels, and overall quality of life after establishing a consistent CBD routine.
One surprising observation is that some pets become more active once they start taking CBD and begin feeling better. If an older pet suddenly wants to do much more than usual, it may be wise to increase activity gradually rather than all at once.
Alternatively, if CBD is helping make your senior pet more more comfortable you may notice they sleep more over the first week as they catch up on their rest. Then they bounce back sometime in week 2.
What If My Pet Is a Picky Eater?
Try:
- Mixing CBD into wet food
- Using treats instead of oils
- Using a more concentrated tincture
- Splitting doses between meals
Most administration problems can be solved by changing the delivery method rather than changing the CBD itself.
Can Pets Take Too Much CBD?
CBD has a strong safety profile and is generally well tolerated, even at relatively high doses.
The most common dose-related effect is mild sleepiness or reduced activity.
If your pet appears unusually sluggish after increasing the dose, give them a few days to adjust to the new dose. If they remain a little sluggish, simply reduce the dose and monitor their response.
Severe reactions should raise questions about THC exposure, contamination, or other ingredients rather than CBD itself.

Who Should Talk To Their Veterinarian First?
You may wish to speak with a veterinarian before using CBD if your pet:
- Takes prescription medications
- Has a significant medical condition
- Is currently under veterinary treatment
Veterinary knowledge of CBD varies considerably, so seeking a veterinarian with clinical experience using hemp or cannabis products is advised.
