The Short Answer

CBG is a naturally occurring, non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp. It is chemically related to CBD and THC but has its own pharmacology and does not produce the characteristic high associated with THC. Researchers are interested in the unique effects that may arise from the pharmacology of this molecule.

In most cannabis flower, CBG is present only in relatively small quantities, which is why it is considered a minor cannabinoid. As a result, smoking typical cannabis flower or making a simple extraction like cannabutter generally won't deliver much CBG per serving without also delivering substantially more THC.

More sophisticated extraction, separation, and concentration techniques allow manufacturers to produce formulas containing high concentrations of CBG with little or no THC. That makes it possible to use meaningful amounts of this minor cannabinoid while remaining clear-headed throughout the day.

Where Does CBG Come From?

CBG is sometimes called the “mother cannabinoid,” but that title more accurately belongs to CBGA (cannabigerolic acid).

CBGA is a major biosynthetic precursor in cannabis. The plant uses it to produce acidic cannabinoids including CBDA, THCA, and CBCA, which can later become CBD, THC, and CBC through decarboxylation. CBG is produced when CBGA itself decarboxylates instead.
So CBG isn't actually the molecule that becomes CBD or THC—the closely related CBGA is.

Why Do People Use CBG?

In our experience, people disproportionately choose CBG for daytime formulas. Customers often describe CBG as more uplifting or clear-headed than CBD alone, although individual experiences vary and those descriptions aren't proof of a specific pharmacological effect.
CBG can be used by itself or combined with other cannabinoids to create formulas with different characteristics.

Human research into CBG is still limited, so these distinctions are based largely on how people use and describe these products rather than established clinical effects.

What Does CBG Do in the Body?

CBG interacts with several biological systems rather than acting through a single receptor. It has activity at the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, with a pharmacological profile distinct from both CBD and THC. Researchers have also identified notable interactions with α2-adrenoceptors and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, among other potential targets.

This broad activity is one reason CBG has attracted interest. Different receptors and signaling systems could potentially produce different effects than we see from CBD alone.

Identifying a receptor interaction doesn't tell us that CBG treats a particular condition but it gives researchers plausible mechanisms to investigate.


What Are Researchers Studying CBG For?

CBG has attracted scientific interest because its pharmacology is different from better-known cannabinoids like CBD and THC. A 2021 review, The Pharmacological Case for Cannabigerol, argued that these differences make CBG particularly worthy of further study while emphasizing how little clinical research had actually been conducted.

- Stress & Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are particularly interesting because this is one of the few areas where CBG has now been tested in a controlled human experiment.

In a 2024 double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 34 healthy adults received either 20 mg of CBG or a placebo. CBG produced statistically significant reductions in self-reported anxiety and reduced stress at one measurement point. Researchers found no evidence of intoxication or motor impairment and also reported an unexpected improvement in verbal memory performance.

That's an interesting result, but it's still a very small study using a single 20 mg dose - lower than the amount of CBG found in a serving of many wellness products now available. It doesn't establish CBG as a treatment for anxiety disorders, determine an effective therapeutic dose, or tell us what happens with long-term use.

- Inflammation & GI Research

Some of the more persistent CBG research has involved inflammation and the gastrointestinal system.

A 2013 study found that CBG reduced several measures of inflammation in a mouse model of colitis, along with effects observed in cultured intestinal cells and macrophages. More recently, a 2024 study found that a high-CBG hemp extract reduced disease severity and altered the gut microbiome and metabolome in another mouse model of colitis.

These findings provide reasons to continue studying CBG in inflammatory bowel disease, but mice with experimentally induced colitis aren't people with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Controlled human trials are needed before we know whether these findings translate into useful clinical effects.

- Neurological Research

Researchers have also investigated CBG and CBG-derived compounds in models of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disease.

For example, CBG has shown neuroprotective effects in mouse models of Huntington's disease, including effects on motor deficits, inflammatory markers, and neuronal damage. Other preclinical work has investigated CBG in models relevant to multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation.

This area also demonstrates why preliminary cannabinoid research needs to be interpreted carefully. A 2026 cell study found dose-dependent toxicity and inconsistent anti-inflammatory effects under its experimental conditions, illustrating that biological activity isn't automatically beneficial and can change with dose and context.

At this point, these findings make CBG an interesting research compound, not an established treatment for neurological disease.

- Antibacterial Research

One of the more unusual areas of CBG research has nothing to do with the endocannabinoid system at all.

Laboratory research has found antibacterial activity against several Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A 2020 study found that CBG could disrupt bacterial membranes, inhibit biofilms, and kill persistent MRSA cells. Researchers also demonstrated activity in a mouse model of systemic MRSA infection.

Research has continued since then. A 2026 study examining CBG and CBGA derivatives found that altering their chemical structures could substantially affect antibacterial activity, suggesting that the CBG molecule may also be useful as a starting point for developing new antimicrobial compounds.

That doesn't mean taking a CBG tincture functions like taking an antibiotic. These are drug-development findings, and translating antibacterial activity in a laboratory into a safe and effective medicine requires considerably more research.


Reality Check: The Research Is Still Early

CBG has genuinely interesting pharmacology. There are plausible mechanisms, encouraging animal and laboratory experiments, and now some early controlled human evidence. That's enough to justify scientific interest in the molecule.

It is not enough to establish most of the therapeutic claims now made about CBG.
Much of the research remains preclinical, and even the 2021 pharmacological review that made a case for studying CBG emphasized the lack of research behind a compound already being commercially marketed for numerous purported benefits.

Questions about effective doses, long-term safety, drug interactions, and whether many of these laboratory findings translate into meaningful benefits for humans remain unanswered.

Interesting evidence is a reason to keep investigating. It isn't the same thing as proof.

- Which Is Stronger, CBG or CBD?

Neither is simply “stronger.” CBG and CBD are different cannabinoids with different pharmacology, and which one is more useful depends on what you're trying to accomplish. They are also frequently used together or combined with other cannabinoids such as CBC and CBN.

CBD has been studied much more extensively in humans, while research into CBG is still relatively limited.

- Does CBG Get You High?

CBG is considered non-intoxicating and does not produce the characteristic high associated with THC.

This isn't based entirely on anecdotes anymore. A 2024 placebo-controlled experiment gave 34 healthy adults 20 mg of CBG and found no evidence of subjective drug effects or impairment. More recent controlled dose-escalation research has similarly found few psychoactive effects from oral CBG.

That's part of CBG's appeal for wellness users. Someone taking CBG expecting the recreational effects of THC, however, is probably going to be disappointed.

- How Much CBG Should I Take?

There is no single “correct” dose of CBG that applies to everyone, and human research isn't developed enough to establish a universal dose.

- Can CBG Cause Side Effects or Drug Interactions?

CBG appears to be reasonably well tolerated in the limited human research conducted so far, but its safety profile is much less established than CBD's. There are plausible drug interactions. CBG is metabolized through several cytochrome P450 enzymes, and laboratory research suggests CBG-rich extracts can interfere with enzymes involved in metabolizing some medications. How clinically important these interactions are at ordinary CBG doses remains unknown.

- Will CBG Make Me Fail a Drug Test?

CBG itself is not THC. The bigger concern is whether the product containing CBG also contains detectable THC.

Products made with broad-spectrum extracts or isolates can be manufactured without detectable THC, but product quality and testing matter. If avoiding THC exposure is important because of drug testing, don't assume that something labeled “CBG,” “hemp,” or even “THC-free” necessarily contains none.

- What Does CBG Feel Like?

Don't expect CBG to feel like THC. It shouldn't produce a high, and at ordinary doses you shouldn't expect stereotypical cannabis effects like suddenly feeling giggly or intensely intoxicated.

Customers often describe CBG as clear-headed or uplifting, particularly compared with CBD-heavy formulas. Other people notice very little directly. Like CBD, the experience is sometimes described less as feeling something new and more as noticing the absence of something that was bothering them.

That's consumer experience rather than proof of a specific clinical effect. Controlled research into what CBG subjectively feels like is only beginning.
