New to CBD Topicals?
CBD topicals come in everything from lightweight lotions to concentrated salves and roll-ons. Here are a few resources to help you understand how they work and choose the right format.
Do CBD Topicals Actually Work?
CBD topicals are applied directly to the skin, but that doesn't mean the cannabinoids travel throughout the body like CBD taken orally. Most conventional topicals are intended primarily for localized use.
The research is still developing, and formulation matters. Our guide looks at what we know about topical cannabinoids, what we don't know, and why ingredients such as menthol and lidocaine can be just as important as the CBD on the label.

Salve, Lotion, or Roll-On?
The biggest difference is how they feel and how you want to use them.
- Salves are concentrated and targeted. Oil- and wax-based formulas stay on the skin longer and work well when you want to apply a small amount to a specific area.
- Lotions are better for larger areas. Their lighter, water-based formulas spread easily and absorb with less residue, making them convenient for everyday use.
- Roll-ons are quick and portable. They require no rubbing with your hands and typically dry quickly, making them especially convenient away from home.
There isn't one best format. Choose the one that fits where, when, and how you expect to use it.

Why Do Topicals Include Menthol, Lidocaine, and Other Ingredients?
CBD is only one part of a topical formula. Menthol and camphor create cooling sensations, while other products may contain ingredients such as lidocaine, arnica, clove, peppermint, or botanical oils.
That's why we evaluate the entire formulation rather than simply looking for the largest CBD number on the label. Two products containing the same amount of CBD can be very different products once the rest of the ingredient list is considered.
Should I Use a Topical or an Edible?
Topicals and ingestible cannabinoids serve different purposes. Topicals are applied directly where you want them, while tinctures, gummies, and capsules are absorbed and distributed throughout the body.
Many customers use both approaches rather than treating them as substitutes—for example, an ingestible product as part of their regular routine and a topical when they want something applied to a specific area.
